COURSE: MUSIC APPRECIATION                                                                         GRADE 7

 

 

I. COURSE OVERVIEW

 

   7th Grade Music Appreciation is a half-year course designed for students to learn about music in an

   exploratory manner.  Students will be learning basic piano skills as well as developing their knowledge

   of society’s influence on music throughout 20th Century America. 

 

II. PROFICIENCIES

 

Students will be able to demonstrate and apply knowledge of the following areas to various projects throughout the semester.

 

1.       Notation: Note Reading, Rhythms, Meter

2.       Develop piano skills

3.       The history and structure of the 12-Bar Blues Form

4.       The structure of Theme and Variations Form

5.       The history and importance of Jazz, Swing and the Big Band Era in American History

6.       The history of musical theatre and how music is used to tell a story

7.       Music in the media and how music is used to create mood

8.       20th Century Experimental composers and their music

II. MATERIALS NEEDED FOR CLASS

1.      3 Ring Binder with loose leaf paper (This does not have to be a separate binder)

2.      Pen

3.      Pencil

 

III. CRITERIA FOR EXCELLENCE (Requirements for receiving and “A” in this course.)

1.      Class Participation (60% of Quarter Grade): Students are always prepared with the necessary materials, are polite and respectful and participate in class discussions and projects.

2.      Projects, Homework, Tests and Quizzes (40% of Quarter Grade): Students demonstrate an understanding of the material covered in class.
