COURSE:  INDUSTRIAL ARTS/SYNERGISTICS                                                      GRADES 6,7,8

I.          COURSE OVERVIEW

Students will take part in 45 40-minute sessions.  Each grade level will complete two or three

projects consisting of a hands-on technology-based unit of study.  The level of difficulty as

well as the math and science proficiency is appropriately matched to the grade levels.  Sixth, seventh and eighth grade students will all be designing, building and testing different projects.  Some of the topics covered are as follows:

6th grade   -     Flight, gravity, geometric shapes, measuring, buoyancy, acceleration, cause and

effect, design process and hypothesis testing.

7th grade  -      Surface area, structural engineering, measuring, problem-solving, teamwork,

woodworking and use of woodworking machinery.

8th grade  -      Calculating speed, structural engineering, aerodynamics, infrastructure,

problem-solving, geometry, computation, estimation, symmetry,

troubleshooting and woodworking

II.          COURSE PROFICIENCIES

Students will develop a measurable awareness of technology and its significant force and sources in their every day lives.  Each unit of study will be explored through the application of design/problem-solving activities, which engage students in hands-on experiences with a variety of technologies.  Students will acquire life skills in problem-solving, which utilizes critical thinking.  This course will develop the idea that technology is the application of knowledge to solve human problems and extend human capabilities.  The activities completed in this course will reinforce and enrich concepts of math, language arts, social studies and science as interdisciplinary components of each unit of study.

III.         COURSE STANDARDS
