COURSE PROFICIENCIES

 

COURSE:  CONCERT BAND                                                       GRADE 7 & 8

 

I.       COURSE OVERVIEW

 

          The purpose of the Frelinghuysen Concert Band is to enable students to further their musical experience through active participation in a musical ensemble.  This course will develop students’ appreciation of music; music literacy; individual and group techniques; analytical, social, creative and performance skills.

 

II.      COURSE PROFICIENCIES

 

          The Concert Band student will:

 

           1.      Demonstrate good tone and pitch.

 

           2.      Demonstrate technical ability leading to increased facility on the instrument.

 

           3.      Hear and match good pitch.

 

           4.      Play specified major and chromatic scales in various rhythms.

 

           5.      Play various intervals.

 

           6.      Demonstrate poise, dependability, and leadership skills necessary for

                   effective band ensemble performance at school and community functions.

 

           7.      Demonstrate increased range and tonguing skills.

 

           8.      Demonstrate ability to identify name and increase use of key signatures,

                   dynamic markings and tempo markings.

 

           9.      Demonstrate reading skills of rhythm notation using various meters.

 

          10.     Play specified rudiments.

 

          11.     Demonstrate ability to identify and play various styles of music.

CONCERT BAND – GRADE 7 & 8

 

COURSE STANDARDS

 

Band students will be evaluated for grading purposes in several areas:

 

I.       GENERAL PREPAREDNESS

·        Prompt arrival to Band Room for rehearsal on a daily basis.

·        Gets music folder and instrument and moves to assigned seat.

·        Warms up by self in preparation for class.

·        Percussionists prepare varied instruments for rehearsal.

·        Has all equipment and supplies needed to participate; pencil, reeds, valve oil, slide/cork grease, drumsticks, etc.

 

II.      POSITIVE BEHAVIOR

·        Is quiet and attentive when director is rehearsing or explaining.

·        Is prompt in responding to directions.

·        Contributes in a positive, musical manner to the Band by playing as well as possible.

 

III.    PARTICIPATION

 

·        Attends both the Winter and Spring Concerts.

·        Attends daily rehearsals on a regular basis.

·        Attends group lessons on a regular basis.

 

IV.     PERFORMANCE AND MUSICAL KNOWLEDGE

 

·        Demonstrates continued improvement in technical skills.

·        Demonstrates continued improvement in performance skills.

 

V.      EXTRA HELP AND MAKE-UP

 

·        Lessons are available by appointment before or after school.
