COURSE PROFICIENCIES
JR. FALCON CHORUS: GRADE 6
I. COURSE
OVERVIEW
The purpose of the Frelinghuysen Jr. Falcon Chorus is
to enable Grade 6 students to further their musical experience through active
participation in a performing vocal musical ensemble. This course will also develop students’
appreciation of music; music literacy; individual and group techniques;
analytical, social, creative and performance skills.
II. COURSE
PROFICIENCIES
The Jr. Falcon Chorus student will
demonstrate:
1. Ability to hear and match good pitch.
2. Ability to identify and sing various
intervals.
3. Ability to sing Major
and Minor scales.
4. Ability to sing in Unison, 2- and 3-part
harmony.
5. Ability to read and understand choral musical scores.
6. Ability to expand vocal range.
7. Awareness of various styles of choral
music and ability to perform them.
8. Ability to increase skills in reading
musical notation using primarily 2/4,
3/4, 4/4 and 6/8 meters.
9. Poise, dependability, and leadership
skills necessary for effective choral
ensemble performance at
school and community functions.
10. Ability to
identify, name and increase use of key signatures, dynamic and
tempo markings as they
occur in choral music.
11. Ability to
analyze and evaluate performance of choral pieces.
12. Ability to
become familiar with and utilize effectively the “instruments”
of vocal
production (lungs, diaphragm, epiglottis, larynx, resonators
(sinuses, soft palate) with
increasing proficiency.
13. Ability to carry skills learned in Chorus
into other classes and into daily
life as
well.

contributions to class.
2. Observed
student performance, individually and in ensemble.
3. Occasional,
written, listening, and vocal quizzes.
II. MATERIALS
FOR CLASS
1. Choral music
folders containing music.
2. Pencil.
3. Writing
paper.
III. CRITERIA
FOR EXCELLENCE (Requirements for
receiving an
“A” in this
course.)
1. Promptness
at rehearsals/class. Absences not
accompanied by a parent/guardian note marked as “unexcused” and grade affected.
2. Attendance at
performances (Winter, Spring concerts, recognition
ceremonies, graduations, and
others as scheduled).
3. Preparedness
for class.
4. Demonstration
of appropriate self-disciplined behavior regarding
self and
others.
5. Demonstration
of improvement and consistency in vocal, technical
and
performance skills individually and in ensemble.
