Frelinghuysen Middle School has a 3-season activity program.  This provides students with an opportunity to participate in more activities throughout our ten month school year.  Some activities and clubs may run through more than one season or last throughout the entire school year.

The goal of our programs

Extra-curricular programs are an integral part of student life at Frelinghuysen Middle School.    Our primary goal is to augment the academic, social and emotional development of our entire student body through offering a variety of athletic, artistic, literary, musical, and philanthropic activities. We encourage every student to get involved. Students are expected to remain in good academic standing as defined by our staff. (Ask your Guidance Counselor or CST member for details.)     

Athletics

All Frelinghuysen Middle School every student is encouraged to participate in our athletic program.  While there are tryouts for most sports, our coaches try to maintain as many children on their rosters as possible. Students are expected to remain in good academic standing while in season as defined by our staff. Our student/athletes sign a code of conduct addressing sportsmanship and other sports related ethics.

Sports physicals are required for participation on all interscholastic teams.  All physicals must be completed prior to tryout dates. It is required that all physicians utilize the paperwork provided by our nurse’s office. Schedules and directions to away events are available in the main office.

The girls’ soccer team is open to all girls who wish to try-out during the first several days of school.  This is an interscholastic activity, there are limited openings.  Emphasis is on conditioning, teamwork, developing soccer fundamentals, and school spirit.  Practice or games will be held every day during the season.

The Drill (STEP) Team offers students an opportunity to pursue their interests in participating on a team that performs synchronized STEP programs at our indoor sports events. The team is limited to approximately twenty members. Try-outs are held.

Opportunity to practice the required cheers before try-outs is offered and all candidates must attend those three days. Emphasis is on teamwork, learning and developing cheerleading fundamentals and school spirit.

ART CLUB – WINTER

The Art Club provides students with the opportunity to develop and enhance their artistic talent in painting, drawing, and the integration of art and computer technology.

CHESS CLUB – WINTER/SPRING

The Chess Club is a newly organized club sponsored and supported by our Home and School Association. The club will provide students with the opportunity to develop, enhance, and/or master their strategic skills in chess while establishing new friendships.

PLAY PRODUCTION/MUSICAL-WINTER/SPRING

Practice time and place:         Specific times and dates are provided in November and December. Please                                                 listen for morning announcements. (You will be required to make                                                                evening and weekend time commitments to the program.)

 

All students in grades 6, 7, and 8 are invited to produce or perform in the musical.  Workshops are offered after school the week before auditions to acquaint students with specific skills, talents and auditions materials they will need for auditions.  The process requires all performers to read, sing  and dance, after which every student is awarded a part in the play.  Rehearsal schedules are posted weekly.  Attendance at rehearsals is mandatory.  Beginning in January, students interested in producing the play are invited to sign up for after school and Saturday work parties to build and paint scenery, learn lighting and scenery moves, and other aspects of production.

 

VOLLEYBALL- SPRING

All students are invited to participate in the intramural volleyball program.   The purpose of this program is to introduce interested students to the game of volleyball. The rules of play, fundamental skills and scoring are covered.

Builders Club is a service organization that provides middle school students the opportunity to develop and carry out projects to build a better world.  It is the youngest member of an international organization which includes Key Club for high school students, Circle K for college students and Kiwanis Club for adults. Frelinghuysen  students will raise money for various worthy causes, tutor 6th graders in need, decorate various offices and areas of the building, send Valentines to Veterans and collect Toys for Tots.

 

JAZZ BAND

The Jazz Band is comprised of musicians who wish to develop and enhance their musical talent.  The group performs at school concerts, and competes in state and regional programs.

SELECT CHORUS

The Select Chorus is comprised of vocalists who wish to develop and enhance their vocal talent. The group performs at school concerts, and competes in state and regional programs.

PEER LEADERSHIP-L.A.N.T.E.R.N.

L.A.N.T.E.R.N. is a leadership training program that utilizes a peer-to-peer approach in order to promote a positive peer culture. Initiatives promote racial harmony and encourage all students to make healthy adolescent decisions. The group also participates in the Staff/Student Talent Show and other fund raising events.  Applications are available to all students however, there is a selection process. 

 

FALCON PRESS AND SOARING FALCON

All students are eligible to join the newspaper staff.  The group produces a high-quality school newspaper and a literary journal. The students are responsible for and are involved in every aspect of the design, writing, editing, and production of each publication.

SCHOOL CONSORTIUM OF NJ

This club is comprised of ten public and private schools. Activities include a chess tournament, spelling bee, problem solving workshop, forensics interpretative reading, tennis, general knowledge tournament, and a choral ensemble. The purpose is to provide unique, worthwhile opportunities to promote student growth in academics, sports, social skills and creative arts.  Students’ achievements are recognized in a variety of healthy ways including regional competitions.    

STUDENT COUNCIL

Student Council is a student run organization that supports and promotes enhanced student life at Frelinghuysen.  Student representatives and officers are elected by the student body.  Campaigns begin in October, followed by elections in November.  Student Council members develop and implement social and service initiatives for our students and staff.

      

YEARBOOK

This group is open to any student who would like to be involved in the production of the yearbook. The staff will be responsible for: developing a yearbook theme, creating a layout design, taking photographs, writing and editing captions and articles, conducting yearbook sales, and critiquing the final product based on “customer satisfaction” and cost effectiveness.

SPECIAL NOTE:  The Boys’ and Girls’ Club of America, NJ AFTER 3, and Girl’s Inc. are  programs made available through grants from individual corporations and the Department of Education. For further information on these fantastic groups, please consult your grade level Guidance Counselor or Child Study Team Case Manager.
